Discover the Artistic Journey of Ipoh's Multi-Talented Michael YC Lip

Ipoh-born and globally inspired, Michael YC Lip, a seasoned landscape architect and architect, is set to dazzle audiences with his unique fusion of creativity at the "Art in the Heart" homecoming exhibition. This extraordinary event will be held at 22 Hale Street in Ipoh, running from September 29 to October 8, 2023, from 10 am to 6 pm daily.

A Diverse Creative Palette

Michael Lip is not your typical artist; he's a true renaissance man. With equal passion for painting, crafting, photography, travel, fashion illustration, gardening, jelly making, baking, interior design, and overall well-being, Michael's art is a reflection of his rich and diverse experiences.

The Artistic Genesis

Michael's artistic journey traces its roots to his early years. Surrounded by a large and talented family, he honed his skills under the guidance of his artistic mother and sisters. His passion for drawing and painting flourished, leading him to develop a unique artistic voice.

During his school years at St. Michael's Institution Ipoh, he was renowned for designing posters for various school events. His artistic prowess further extended to fashion design, with his illustrations gracing the pages of publications like Fanfare, Her World, the Crusader, the Malay Mail, and the Malaysian Catholic News.

From Architecture to Art

Michael's pursuit of formal education in architecture took him to Kuala Lumpur Technical College in 1969, followed by a stint in Adelaide, Australia in 1972. He then embarked on a journey of self-discovery with a Masters in Landscape Architecture in Sheffield, England, in 1976. Along the way, he seized every opportunity to explore museums, art galleries, and architectural wonders across Europe.

In 1983, he ventured into establishing two architectural companies while also embracing family life. However, his passion for art never waned. Four decades later, he found his way back to the canvas, rekindling his love for painting.

The Artistic Style

Michael's background as an architect and landscape architect strongly influences his art. His paintings predominantly feature heritage buildings, flora and fauna, cultural artifacts, and the human form in action. His preferred styles include Realism with a touch of Surrealism and Expressionism.

Awards and Recognition

Michael's artistic resurgence has not gone unnoticed. He was honored with the Honorary Mention Award in the Monochrome 2021 Online Art Exhibition at J. Mane Gallery, USA. He was also recognized as one of the artists by Saatchi USA's International Online Art Gallery.

Ageless Inspiration

For Michael, age is no barrier to creativity. He draws inspiration from his 99-year-old foster mother, Dorrie Ellard in Berri, South Australia, who continues to paint prolifically. Her journey from retiring as a dental nurse in her sixties to becoming a renowned artist is a testament to the enduring power of art.

The Future of Art in Ipoh

As the art world adapted to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Michael observed a shift towards online exhibitions. While effective, he believes that physical exhibitions offer a more immersive experience. With the lifting of MCO restrictions, he hopes to see the Ipoh art scene flourish, and he aspires to contribute to its growth.

Words of Wisdom for Aspiring Artists

Michael Lip shares invaluable advice for aspiring painters: "Learn everything about painting, attend art classes with experienced teachers, embrace constructive criticism, maintain humility, and start with affordable pricing. Promote your work and yourself through social media and participate in open exhibitions."
